Old Brown Dog has been around for many years. It was first brewed in 1988 at our Northhampton Brewery. In 1989, it won a silver medal in its category at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. Old Brown Dog has also been served at our Portsmouth Brewery since 1991.

Where did the name "Smuttynose" come from?
Our company is named for Smuttynose Island, one of the Isles of Shoals, a small, rugged archipelago that lies seven miles off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine. Smuttynose was named by mariners who thought that the low, seaweed covered island looked like the "smutty nose" of neighboring Hog Island (now called Appledore). Steeped in history and legend, the Isles of Shoals have been home to poets, pirates, ghosts and fishermen.

The Smuttynose Brewing Company was founded in 1994 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. We are not new to the microbrewery business. In fact, we were among the first pioneers in New England. Our Northampton Brewery, which we opened in 1987, was the second brewpub in the entire northeast. The Portsmouth Brewery, which we opened in 1991, was the first brewpub in New Hampshire. With the Smuttynose Brewing Company, we continue our leadership in the microbrewing industry - ours is a genuine craft brewery, whose mission is to brew fine, fresh, distinctive ales, characteristic of our New England origins.
